CERT Adult Volunteer Opportunities

Chula Vista has a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), which meets monthly to organize and train in Emergency Preparedness.  Volunteers are ready to assist Chula Vista's Fire Department, should the Fire Chief request the team's assistance during a disaster.

All CERT members attend a free 24-hour academy, which teaches emergency preparedness. The primary CERT training curriculum has been designed and funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which is taught in most cites across America.  The core CERT topics taught are:

  • Emergency Preparedness
  • Fire Safety
  • Emergency Medical Operations - Parts 1 and 2
  • Light Search and Rescue
  • CERT Organization
  • Disaster Psychology
  • Terrorism and CERT
  • Course review and disaster simulation

Volunteers for Chula Vista’s CERT program must be 18 years or older, reside in or work for the City of Chula Vista.  While there are no health restrictions, understand this volunteer assignment is very active and climbing, lifting, walking on uneven ground, and entering smoky environments is common. Those not living or working in Chula Vista can find their local program at:

If you are interested in joining Chula Vista CERT, please submit an application using the following link: CERT Volunteer Application

Finally, many people attend CERT academies and go on to learn many other helpful skills for assisting themselves and others during disasters.  There are no obligations for CERT members other than they use the disaster skills as they were taught.  Some volunteers work with their local CERT team for years, while others attend so they become better prepared individually.  It is a win for everyone, either way.
