What is STRETCH?

stretch logo
STRETCH is a partnership between the Educational Services Division of the Chula Vista Public Library and the Chula Vista Elementary School District.

The goal of STRETCH is to create a dynamic, and stimulating after school environment that gives children the boost they need to succeed academically and socially.

This free program provides structured academic activities for 1st-6th grade students at seven of Chula Vista's Title I elementary school sites.

Programs generally operate for 3 hours and 15 minutes from the time of school dismissal. STRETCH does not operate when school is closed, or during school intercessions, vacations and holidays.

How Are Students Selected?

All 1st-6th grade students who attend STRETCH schools can apply, however, priority is given to students referred by school personnel based on academic and social need.

Each site maintains a waiting list.

Curriculum
The curriculum is designed to help students meet or exceed state content standards in reading and math in a fun, camp-like atmosphere.

Activities incorporate literature, drama, math, writing, and art.
Students who come every day receive the most benefit from STRETCH.

Homework
30-45 minutes each Monday-Thursday is devoted to homework. Staff will provide individual assistance, however, we cannot be responsible for correcting homework.
It is each student's responsibility to use Homework Center time constructively.

STRETCH Staff
Each site is staffed by a STRETCH Coordinator, and 3 to 5 Youth Leaders.
All staff are certified in First Aid and CPR and receive specialized training addressing behavior management, literacy development, and curriculum. Staff members must also undergo a background check and a physical health exam.

Discipline
To provide the best possible experience for all participants STRETCH staff will hold each child to the same behavior standards as those enforced by the school.

PLEASE NOTE:
The STRETCH staff is instructed to contact the Chula Vista Police Department if a child has been left on site after closing time.

Daily Sign-IN/OUT
To participate in the program, children are required to sign-in with their STRETCH Youth Leader each day within 5 minutes of school dismissal.
We ask that parents inform the Site Coordinator when their children will not be in attendance or needs to leave early.
STRETCH staff cannot be responsible for children who do not sign-in or who leave the school grounds.

Parents or other authorized persons must sign students out, or give written permission for them to walk home.

Parents must advise the Site Coordinator in writing, or call using a Personal Identification Number (PIN), if a person not listed on the release form is to pick up their child. Each child needs 30 minutes of daylight to walk home.

STRETCH does not operate when Schools are closed for intercession, vacations or holidays.
