Urban Forestry
Request Tree Trimming Online | NEW!
The
purpose of the Urban Forestry Program is to provide tree trimming, reforestation, and preservation services to the community so they can enjoy the benefits of trees that are healthy, safe and growing in public areas.
This section also provide uniform guidelines for street tree trimming
and care, which will provide an attractive appearance for all street
trees, improve street tree health, and help ensure public safety.
Planting of Plants on City Property:
No tree, palm, shrub, or other vegetation may be planted within
City parkways or other public right-of-ways without prior approval
from The City Arborist or the Parks & Open Space Manager. They
will approve the plant material, designate the location thereof,
and determine if root barrier is required for the species allowed.
Note that crews only maintain trees only within parkways.

Each
street within the City has a designated street tree assigned. Under
most circumstances, this pre-designated variety of tree will be
the only tree permitted within the right-of-way. In new developments,
complete uniformity to the pre-approved species and locations is
required. The purpose of this policy is to achieve uniformity within
a development and not require replacement of undesirable species.
Tree Specifications:
-
All trees shall be firmly rooted into containers of at least
15 gallons in size.
-
All trees shall be approximately 6 feet in height.
-
All trees shall be double staked and double tied in a professional
manner.
-
All trees shall be a minimum of 5 feet away from all utilities
and driveway entries.
-
All trees shall be planted even with the surrounding grade or
slightly higher.
-
All planting holes shall not be dug deeper than the root ball
so as to require backfilling to elevate the tree to the surrounding
grade, which can cause latter settling below grade.
-
Installation of root barrier (preferable Biobarrier) is required
for trees in all parkways of less than 10', measured from the
inside of the curb to the edge of the sidewalk.
City
Of Chula Vista Reforestation Policy:
The City Of Chula Vista will purchase and plant trees on City property,
tree planting easements, or right-of-ways for a fee. This fee will
include the installation of root barriers, which is necessary in
most cases, to protect the curbs and sidewalks from probable root
damage.
Properties wider than 60 feet may be eligible for a more than one
tree. Lots with 80 feet or more of frontage are eligible for street
trees every 40 feet if site conditions allow for this to occur.
Any questions regarding City trees, please call (619) 397-6000 or visit the Service Requests page.
