Fire Training Division
Mission Statement
The Mission of the Chula Vista Fire Department's Training Division
is to provide effective and realistic training for all personnel
based on fire service standards, information analysis, and emergency
response demands.
Organizational Structure
There are currently four personnel assigned to the Fire Training
Division, a Battalion Chief, two Fire Captains and one secretary.
The Training Facility is located at 850 Paseo Ranchero adjacent
to Fire Station 4. This location also has a training classroom
and training tower which won an architectural award.
The training classroom is capable of handling a class of up to 40
students. The department is currently planning an expansion of the
Training area to accommodate the Fire Department's growth and training
needs.
The training provided to a modern day firefighter is as diverse
as the types of calls the Fire Department responds to. One moment
the firefighters are fighting a structure fire and the next moment
they are assisting an elderly person back into their wheel chair.
From the moment a firefighter is hired until the day they retire,
they are immersed in training. The numerous dangers of a superheated
atmosphere inside of a structure fire are not ideal for "on
the job training'' sessions. The Training Division's goal is to
provide valuable training before a firefighter is presented with
the many different types of emergency and non-emergency calls for
service. Some of these training topics include:
- Academy Training for New Hires
- Incident Command and Control
- Structural Firefighting
- Vehicle Firefighting
- Wildland Firefighting
- Fire Investigation
- High Angle Rescue
- Confined Space Rescue
- Trench Rescue
- Vehicle Rescue
- Hazardous Materials
- Building Collapse
- Disaster Preparedness, Response, Mitigation
- Emergency Medical Training
- Includes Defibrillator and Combitube
- Report Writing
- Software Training
- Employee Developmental and Promotional Training
When the training is Chula Vista Fire Department specific the Training
Division facilitates the training, but since some state and federal
mandated training is very general it is much more cost effective
to look elsewhere for the training. One of the programs that the
Chula Vista Fire Department is proud to be a part of is Southwestern
College's ROP "In-Service Training" program. The other
San Diego County fire departments participate as well and
for topics like EMT recertification, hazardous materials training,
and etc. it is a perfect venue for a drill or class. It also serves
to get all of the fire service resources in the South Bay together
on a monthly basis. Consolidation of training classes with other
departments pays large dividends when operating on mutual aid emergency
incidents. Other training may be too specialized for the Chula Vista
Fire Department to offer internally, so personnel go to classes
and seminars locally, regionally and nationally.
One of the many added benefits of having a full time training staff
is that training can be custom fit to the many challenges and opportunities
consistent with a large fire department. The Training Chief and
Captains sit on several fire department committees with the goal
of improving training's efficiency, effectiveness and overall safety
of fire department operations.
