Working in concert with other police staff, the Research Unit studies crime and disorder problems, helps identify ways of effectively addressing these problems, and assesses the impact of problem-solving initiatives. The Research Unit also provides support to other Department units in identifying and implementing best practices.

The unit's responsibilities also include formalizing numerous research and development activities, providing strategic updates, and examining innovative practices.
