At approximately 7:15 p.m. on the night of July 10, 2008 CVPD undercover officers working in and around the Palomar Trolley Station observed a dark colored Honda Accord being driven at a high rate of speed as it entered the Food 4 Less parking lot in the 600 block of Palomar Street. Officers observed three of the 5 occupants of the Honda exit that car and get into a parked, silver colored Saturn. After a few moments that car was started, with thick smoke coming out of the exhaust. Undercover officers also observed that one of the occupants of the Saturn matched the description of one of the suspects in a rash of sidewalk robberies that had been taking place throughout the day. Patrol officers were alerted and before the drivers of both vehicles could flee the parking lot police units cut off the exits and pinned in the cars. The two occupants of the Honda fled on foot, but were arrested inside a nearby Ross Store. The three suspects in the Saturn were arrested without incident.
The cars were reported stolen and property from the robberies was recovered from inside both cars.
All 5 suspects are juveniles ranging in age from 15 to 17. 3 are Chula Vista residents, 1 is a National City resident and 1 is an Imperial Beach resident. Further investigation led to the arrest of 18-year old Christopher Valles. He was arrested at his residence at 750 Colorado Avenue, Apartment B, Chula Vista, CA 91910. Stolen property was recovered from the residence. Valles was booked into the Chula Vista Jail, then transferred to County Jail. He is charged with robbery, possession of stolen property and conspiracy to commit robbery. His bail is $60,000.00 The juvenile suspects were all taken to juvenile hall for processing. They are charged with robbery, possession of stolen property, conspiracy to commit robbery and vehicle theft. Investigators believe there may have been more robberies that were not reported.
