7/27/2009 - 4 YEAR OLD CHILD DIES IN COLLISION WITH TROLLEY

Chula Vista Police Dept. On Sunday, 07-26-09, AT ABOUT 1832 HOURS, THE CHULA VISTA POLICE DEPARTMENT RECEIVED REPORTS OF A COLLISION BETWEEN AN MTS TROLLEY AND A BICYCLIST WITH A YOUNG CHILD ON THE BACK OF THE BIKE.

OFFICERS RESPONDED TO THE TROLLEY CROSSING AT INDUSTRIAL BOULEVARD AND L STREET AND FOUND TWO VICTIMS, A 34 YEAR OLD MALE AND HIS FOUR YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WITH SERIOUS INJURIES.

THE FOUR YEAR OLD GIRL WAS IN A CHILD BIKE SEAT ON THE BACK OF THE BIKE AND SHE WAS NOT WEARING A HELMET. CHULA VISTA POLICE OFFICERS FOUND THE CHILD STILL STRAPPED INTO THE BIKE SEAT AND SHE WAS UNRESPONSIVE WITH AN APPARENT HEAD INJURY. CHULA VISTA POLICE OFFICERS AND A P.E.R.T. (PSYCHOLOGICAL EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM) CLINICIAN RIDING WITH AN OFFICER PERFORMED CPR UNTIL RELIEVED BY MEDICAL PERSONNEL. THE CHILD WAS TRANSPORTED TO CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL WHERE SHE SUCCUMBED TO HER INJURIES.

HER FATHER WAS TRANSPORTED TO UCSD AND IS BEING TREATED FOR A BROKEN HIP AND POSSIBLE INTERNAL INJURIES.

WITNESSES REPORT THAT THE TWO WERE RIDING WESTBOUND ON L STREET APPROACHING THE TROLLEY CROSSING AT INDUSTRIAL BOULEVARD. THE TROLLEY SIGNALS WERE ACTIVATED AND THE SAFETY ARMS WERE LOWERED, INDICATING THAT A TROLLEY WAS APPROACHING. THE FATHER STEERED AROUND THE TROLLEY ARMS AND ATTEMPTED TO CROSS THE TRACKS AS THE TROLLEY APPROACHED. THE TROLLEY OPERATOR SAW THE BIKE RIDE AROUND THE BARRIERS AND APPLIED THE BRAKES BUT WAS UNABLE TO STOP IN TIME. THE TROLLEY STRUCK THE REAR OF THE BICYCLE, THROWING BOTH VICTIMS APPROXIMATELY FORTY FEET.

INVESTIGATORS FOR THE SAN DIEGO METROPOLITAN TRANSIT SYSTEM ARE INVESTIGATING THE COLLISION.
