10/30/2009 - Robbery suspects arrested after pursuit and crash

At approximately 10:30 a.m. a fight broke out at the E Street trolley stop in Chula Vista, after a robbery attempt, leading to a police chase that ended in a crash at Bay Boulevard at the I-5.

Witnesses say the incident began at a convenience store near the trolley stop when two suspects asking for money approached two male victims who had just a store ATM. The victims complied by giving the victim's a small sum of money, but the suspects began demanding more money and making threats.

As the victim's walked to the trolley station the suspects followed in thier car. A fight broke out and one of the supects struck one of the victim's with a crowbar. A passenger waiting for the trolley witnessed the attack and called 911. After the attack the suspects got into their car and drove from the scene.

A Chula Vista police officer was patroling near the trolley station when the call came in. He spotted the suspect vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The suspects initially complied, but then raced away from the officer who pursued the suspects on to the southbound I-5 from E Street. The suspect car was traveling at approximately 90 miles per hour when the driver took the L street exit in Chula Vista, lost control of his car and hit a tree head-on as they attempted to re-enter the freeway.

The crash caused the suspects to be trapped in their car. Firefighters had to extract them from the vehicle. Both suspects were arrested and transported to area hospitals for treatment.

One of the victim's was also transported for treatment due to injuries he sustained in the fight.

The suspects were charged with assault with a deadly weapon, robbery and evading police.

An arrest itself is not evidence that the defendant committed the crimes charged. The defendant is presumed innocent until the Government meets its burden in court of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
