1/6/2010 - Burning and attempted murder

On January 6, 2010, at about 3:47 pm, the Chula Vista Police Department received a call of a burn victim located near the Food-4-Less store at 1320 East 30th Street in Chula Vista. The National City Police Department was already on scene. Witness interviews revealed that the suspect, Anthony Padgett, a 29-year-old homeless resident of Chula Vista, had intentionally set the victim on fire. The victim was reportedly unconscious at the time he was set on fire.

The victim and the suspect were reportedly close friends, and the incident occurred in an area they both frequented. The victim, Sydney Moreno, a 49-year-old homeless resident of Chula Vista, suffered 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns over at least 30-percent of his body. The victim was transported to the U.C.S.D. Burn Center, where he remains in critical condition.

The suspect was arrested and booked for attempted murder and mayhem.
