Summary: Over the past two years the San Diego Regional Auto Theft Task Force (RATT) has focused on the rising trend of motorcycle theft in San Diego County. RATT detectives have joined forces with the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, National Insurance Crime Bureau, the California Highway Patrol, the San Diego Police Department and insurance companies such as State Farm, Geico, Progressive and AAA, to reduce motorcycle theft in San Diego County.
One facet of this investigation included purchasing stolen motorcycles, in an under cover capacity, from unsuspecting subjects who were selling stolen motorcycles for profit. During these transactions detectives also purchased illegal assault weapons and were solicited to purchase explosives. The under cover operation allowed detectives to not only purchase stolen motorcycles and firearms but gather intelligence on the working groups in the auto theft world.
Through out the investigation, dubbed “Operation Knee Drag”, RATT detectives have identified over 130 individuals involved in motorcycle theft. To date there have been 62 arrests. During the month of December there were eight (8) arrests and on today’s date we added seven (7) more. Three additional unnamed subjects are still at large. We anticipate their arrests along with several others in the near future. Operation Knee Drag will continue its fight against motorcycle theft.
The individuals arrested were: Jorge Romero (23 years Old) from Spring Valley; Teryn Renee Leone (23 years old) from Lemon Grove, Adrian Balley (22 years old) and Victor Balley (30 years old) both from Riverside County; Daniel Fidel Chavez (21 years old) from San Diego, John Luis Cervantes (26 years old) and Amanda Castillo (26 years old) both from Rosarito, Mexico.
All seven subjects were booked into county jail with bails ranging from $25,000 to $500,000.00.
The cases are under review by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office.
