12/29/2010 - New Year's Eve Gunfire Will Lead to Jail Time

For most people New Year's Eve is a time of peaceful celebration, However, there are some people who believe shooting a gun into the air at midnight is their right. Make no mistake, in the State of California recklessly firing a weapon is illegal and a felony.

Beside being illegal, recklessly firing a weapon into the air could lead to someone's injury or death; what goes up, must come down. For a bullet fired into the air that means returning to earth between 300 and 700 feet per second, fast enough to penetrate the human skull.

Eighty percent of these types of gunshot injuries occur to the head, shoulders or feet according the the Centers for Disease Control, and 32% of the time these injuries are fatal.

If you hear gunfire:

  • Take cover,
  • Immediately report the activity to the police department
  • "Chula Vista Police are prepared to arrest anyone caught shooting out the old year. This will not be tolerated as a way to celebrate," said Chief David Bejarano.
