Coronado - On Saturday, May 28th, 2011, Officers from Chula Vista, National City, Coronado, San Diego, Probation, and the San Diego County Sheriff's Department conducted a multi-agency DUI Saturation Patrol in Imperial Beach. The operation was part of the Repeat Offender DUI Prosecution and Awareness Program funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety. During the operation, 5 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence, one of whom has a prior conviction for driving under the influence. In addition, 12 vehicles were impounded for drivers without valid licenses. In total, 2136 cars drove through the checkpoint, and 783 of them were directly contacted by officers.
This was considered a successful operation, both in number of impaired drivers removed from the street and in the amount of public awareness generated. The South Bay Regional law enforcement agencies will be continuing their efforts to keep drivers in our community safe.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
