On 6/29/11 patrol officers responded to a reported robbery and carjacking in the 200 block of East Oxford Street in Chula Vista. The victim told officers that when he arrived for work, two masked suspects, lying in wait, simulated having a handgun, bound him with duct tape, and took his vehicle and money.
Yesterday, Chula Vista Police detectives and the U.S. Marshall's Fugitive Apprehension Team arrested the suspect, 21 year old Jimmy Rodriguez of Chula Vista. Rodriguez was on federal probation for a drug-related conviction. The second suspect has not yet been arrested.
Rodriguez was booked into county jail and is being held on $750,000 bail for charges of robbery, carjacking, burglary and conspiracy. He was arraigned this morning at 8:00 a.m. in South Bay court.
An arrest itself is not evidence that the defendant committed the crimes charged. The defendant is presumed innocent until the government meets its burden in court of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
