46-year old Keith Malkiewicz of National City has been charged with the murder of 52-year old Michael Shea, also of National City.
On Friday 07-29-11 at approximately 11:00 a.m. National City Police were called to a report of a body in the river bottom near the westbound 54 freeway.
The case was original investigated by NCPD, but the case was turned over to the Chula Vista Police Department after it was determined that the body was in CVPD jurisdiction.
The victim’s body had signs of trauma and was determined a suspicious death. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy revealing that the 52-year-old man had died of blunt-force head injuries. The death was determined to be a homicide.
Through the investigation it was determined that both victim and suspect had been in the river bottom drinking heavily, leading to a verbal argument that escalated to physical violence. The victim eventually walked off from the fight and a short time later died.
Through witness accounts and interviews it was determined that the key suspect was Keith Malkiewicz, a 46 years old transient who frequents the Sweetwater River bottom.
Malkiewicz was taken into custody on 08-01-11 on a misdemeanor warrant. On 08-02-11 Malkiewicz was also booked on 187 PC while he was waiting to appear on the warrant.
The victim is identified as 52-year old Michael Shea of National City.
