|Three Chula Vista schools took home trophies in this month’s “Battle of the Books” library competition. Champions include Kellogg, Chula Vista Hills and Halecrest Elementary schools. In March, fourth graders from 11 local elementary schools participated in the Chula Vista Public Library’s 7th annual “Battle of the Books” event.
“Battle of the Books” is a test of knowledge in which teams of fourth graders are quizzed on questions from five books. Initially, each participating school holds a semi-final competition in which the best team is declared the school’s winner. Those winners participate in a regional final (Southwest Chula Vista, Northwest Chula Vista, and Eastern Chula Vista), where the best team is awarded the trophy. This is the second year the library awarded regional winners; gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded to the top three teams in each region.
“This year’s competition was fierce and intense,” said Debbie Taylor, the library’s Children’s Services Manager. “We changed the way we asked questions to ensure fairness, and it really added to the excitement.”
Event sponsors included Altrusa International, whose members donated $2,500 to the library; Barnes & Noble, who hosted a reception that raised over $700 for the Chula Vista Public Library Foundation; and the Friends of the Library. Altrusa members and EastLake Kohl’s assisted in running the competitions.
The winning teams will appear before the Chula Vista City Council March 24.
