Beginning April 13, Chula Vista’s Development Services Department will cut back operating hours for the department counters. New hours will be Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The reduction is due to a new round of employee layoffs April 9.
Over the past two years, Development Services has reduced staffing levels by approximately 40%. As a result, the department has lost a significant number of counter staff. Planners, inspectors and administrators have been filling in, but more cuts this month make it impossible to keep the counters open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Based on data from the department’s customer tracking system, the 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. window captures the majority of business done at both counters.
The Development Services counters provide a variety of essential services to professionals in the building industry and everyday people. Developers are in need of counter services to plan, grade and build subdivisions. Individuals require help from counter staff to apply for permits to build patio covers, replace water heaters or hold a garage sale.
The new hours will be in effect until further notice.
