Parents can brush up on CPR skills and water safety tips while their kids learn to swim at the City of Chula Vista’s April Pools Day event, Saturday April 25. Join lifeguards, firefighters and pool safety experts for an afternoon of fun, free swimming lessons for kids and water safety tips—just in time for summer. The City’s Recreation and Fire departments are hosting the free event at the Loma Verde Family Aquatic Center (1420 Loma Lane) from noon to 3 p.m.
The event is a reminder that May is Drowning Prevention Month. And the day’s activities will highlight the Chula Vista WARN (Water Awareness in Residential Neighborhoods) program that focuses on keeping children safe around swimming pools. Every year, approximately 300 children under the age of five drown in U.S. swimming pools. Last year, seven children under the age of 14 drowned in San Diego County.
Co-sponsors of April Pools Day include the San Diego County Aquatic Council, Safe Kids San Diego, Rady Children's Hospital, the County Department of Environmental Health, the American Red Cross and Independent Pool & Spa Service Association.
At April Pools Day, kids can have a blast playing aquatic games, enjoying drinks and snacks and vying for prizes. Participants will be entered for an opportunity to win summer swim lessons at a Chula Vista pool-- compliments of Safe Kids San Diego.
Pre-register children for an April Pools Day free swim class or sign up the day of the event.
