Chula Vista’s environmental leadership has led to four Chula Vista businesses, out of 27 total awards, receiving the State’s recognition as a CoolCalifornia Small Business. The Chula Vista businesses received awards in three of four categories, capturing 15% of the awards statewide.
The California Air Resources Board announced the winners of the state's first program to recognize small businesses that have demonstrated exceptional success in saving money while cutting their greenhouse gas emissions. The CoolCalifornia Small Business awards program honors small California businesses and organizations that have established leadership and made notable, voluntary achievements towards reducing their climate impact.
“These businesses are exceptional,” said Mayor Cheryl Cox. “As certified businesses of the Chula Vista Clean Business Program, they are demonstrating a commitment to sustainable business practices which foster a healthy future for our community and our environment.”
Chula Vista winners include: Spirit Graphics, Small Business of the Year Award. Spirit Graphics relocated their facility closer to employees’ homes, and recycles 100% of their press plates and 90% of their paper waste, saving 40 tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year.
High Tech High Chula Vista, Organization of the Year Award. A new charter high school, HTHCV installed a 101 kilowatt solar array that offsets 64% of the building’s energy use, provides parking spaces for fuel-efficient vehicles, and encourages carpooling for students.
