City of Chula Vista Set to Open Veterans Wing at Chula Vista Civic Center Library

Chula Vista Mayor Cheryl Cox and Congressman Bob Filner will dedicate the Veterans Wing in the Civic Center Library on Friday, June 4 at 3 p.m. The ceremony will take place at the branch located at 365 F Street.

The renovated northwest corner of the branch will be recognized as the Veterans Wing -- a dedicated gathering space for veterans and the general public with updated military information, books and media materials. New carpeting, furniture, and patriotic artwork were included in the re-model. The Library plans to use the area for special events celebrating Veterans Day, Memorial Day, book readings, movies and featured book displays to honor the role that veterans have played in the history of the United States.

The renovation was possible due to a $95,000 Congressionally Directed Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Congressman Filner secured the grant monies in the FY 2009 Omnibus Appropriations Act (P.L. 111-8). Library staff met with representatives from the Chula Vista Veterans Advisory Commission and Veterans Home of Chula Vista to consult on the project.

The City of Chula Vista is home to 16,000 veterans and their families, and one of only three veterans homes in the State of California is located within its boundaries.
