LUNCH AT THE LIBRARY

The Chula Vista Public Library, in cooperation with the Chula Vista Elementary School District, will be providing lunches to children during school breaks. Through the California Department of Education's "Seamless Summer Feeding Option,” both the Civic Center Library (365 F Street,) and the South Chula Vista Library (389 Orange Avenue), will distribute free lunches to children between 12 and 1 p.m. during week days. The spring break "Lunch at the Library" will begin on March 26 for two weeks. The exceptions are March 30, and April 5 and 6, which are considered public/school holidays and no lunches will be served those dates.

The program is designed so that children accustomed to receiving a school lunch during the week do not go hungry during school breaks. Alternative lunch distribution sites within familiar neighborhoods are helpful in getting food to these children. Meals are prepared, packaged and delivered by the school district to the library, where staff has been trained in food handlers classes to distribute the free lunches. Children under age 18 wishing to receive a lunch simply need to show up at their closest Chula Vista library between 12 and 1 p.m.

“The library continues to offer fun activities for school children during school breaks. Story time in the mornings, tutoring in the afternoons, PJ story times in the early evenings, as well as computers for use, all make the library a good place to distribute lunch to children,” said Library Director Betty Waznis.

On the days that lunches are being distributed, the library will also host an after lunch movie screening for children at 1:30 p.m. Waznis stated, "We hope that children will enjoy a nutritious lunch and afterwards, relax and enjoy a movie.” The Chula Vista library plans to distribute lunches during the summer school break as well.
