|Chula Vista and South Bay residents will now have another local opportunity to learn about upgrading their homes to make them more comfortable and to reduce their energy bills. The City of Chula Vista partnered with the California Center for Sustainable Energy (CCSE) and San Diego Gas & Electric to create the new “Chula Vista Energy Upgrade Demonstration Home.” The distressed property, located at 245 Ash Avenue, was purchased through the Chula Vista First-Time Homebuyer Program using Department of Housing & Urban Development Neighborhood Stabilization Funds and will be eventually resold to a qualifying low-income family. This is the second home the City of Chula Vista has purchased for this informational program.
Energy efficient upgrades include LED lighting, special windows, a tankless water heater, and ENERGY STAR-certified roof and kitchen appliances. A solar photovoltaic system was installed on the home by GRID Alternatives with the help of over 20 community volunteers and the system’s panels were donated by Sullivan Solar Power. The home also provided local hands-on job training opportunities through CCSE and the County of San Diego’s GETUP program.
The home will be highlighted through monthly public open houses and onsite contractor trainings to promote energy and water-saving upgrades that also improve occupants’ health and safety. Upcoming open houses, scheduled on select Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., include September 22 and October 20. Residents attending an open house will also learn about rebates, incentives, and low-interest loans available through the Energy Upgrade California Community Savings Initiative and the Chula Vista Home Upgrade, Carbon Downgrade programs.
