|The City of Chula Vista welcomes the Holiday in the Village event sponsored by the Third Avenue Village Association (TAVA) on Saturday, December 1. The festivities will be held in the newly remodeled Village Plaza and throughout downtown Third Avenue. The Holiday in the Village event will replace the annual Starlight Parade this year due to potential safety issues from the construction of the Third Avenue Streetscape Project.
The community is invited to kick off the holiday season at this free event starting at noon and concluding with the annual lighting of Third Avenue at 5 p.m. The festivities include live music, carolers, children’s activities, artisans, the “ugliest Holiday sweater contest,” holiday chalk art, karaoke, classic car displays and pictures with Santa. Don’t miss a guest appearance by 20th Century Fox’s “Ice Age” characters and watch Third Avenue light up with twinkling holiday lights.
City Manager, Jim Sandoval said, “The City’s glad the new Third Avenue Streetscape will provide more opportunities for pedestrian-friendly activities allowing us to showcase our historic downtown area. We thank the Third Avenue merchants for their patience during the construction. I also want to extend my appreciation of their efforts in continuing the long standing tradition of celebrating the holidays on Third Avenue even during this time of construction.”
The event will take place on the pedestrian Village Plaza adjacent to Memorial Park and along Third Avenue from G to E Streets. Third Avenue merchants will showcase their shops with decorated windows, retail and restaurant specials.
“We welcome the opportunity to create a family-oriented event to celebrate the holidays while highlighting our merchants in the Third Avenue Village District,” said Luanne Hulsizer, Executive Director of the Third Avenue Village Association. “We’d love for people to visit the district and see the new changes.”
This first phase of the Third Avenue Streetscape Project totals $5 million. The project is funded by the City of Chula Vista and TAVA and includes a $2 million TransNet Smart Growth Incentive Program Grant from the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG). Phase 1 of the project will transform Third Avenue from H Street and north to Madronna Street near Memorial Park. The revitalization of the historic Third Avenue will reduce traffic lanes, shorten pedestrian crossings, expand sidewalks, add drought tolerant landscaping and trees, and enhance street lighting.
