Power Plant Implosion Draws Large Crowd
After taking a stand along Chula Vista’s bayfront for over 50 years, the South Bay Power Plant was imploded on Saturday, February 2, 2013. A crowd estimated at over 5,000 waited for the 7 a.m. event that featured 40 explosives placed within the 165 foot structure. Then at 7:03 a.m., a few quick flashes, a loud thunderous noise and it crumbled down in just under two minutes! The crowd cheered and city officials smiled knowing this is the start of something big for Chula Vista.

Once the site is cleared and readied, the area will be turned into a public park, an RV park and open space buffer. The implosion made national headlines with coverage from Miami to Lexington, from LA to Baja, California and even CNN!
