|Maria Kachadoorian, the Director of Finance/Treasurer for the City of Chula Vista, was honored as San Diego “CFO of the Year” at the San Diego Business Journal awards program on March 14, 2013.
The San Diego Business Journal recognizes individuals who go above and beyond their duties as CFO by playing a major role in the success of their businesses. An independent panel of judges narrows nominees to a select group of 12 honorees from 45 finalists. The judges chose honorees based on a number of measures, including career success, contributions to company growth and profitability, community involvement, as well as assisting in other areas of the organization.
Kachadoorian joined the City in January 1998, and has over 25 years of professional experience in Accounting, Internal Auditing and Budgeting. As the Finance Director/Treasurer, Kachadoorian assists the City Council and the City Manager in maintaining public confidence in the fiscal integrity of the City by accounting for, safeguarding, investing and reporting on the City’s resources in accordance with sound public financial management practices.
Under her leadership, the City of Chula Vista has weathered one of its most volatile financial periods culminating in the layoffs of over 320 city employees in three years, and a drastic reduction in services. Chula Vista was one of the first cities in San Diego County to implement mandatory pension reform of its employees which provided a $6 million annual cost savings to the city. More recent, however, Kachadoorian reported to the City Council that the City has maintained a balanced budget and is near its goal of having 15 percent in reserves.
Kachadoorian grew up in Imperial Beach and graduated from Mar Vista High School. She earned her B.S. Degree with an emphasis in Accounting and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from San Diego State University. She is also a Certified Public Accountant.
