Overnight Closures of Sweetwater Road at Interstate 805 Scheduled

Sweetwater Road at Interstate 805 (I-805) may be closed intermittently overnight during the next four weeks to accommodate work to widen the freeway bridge. The sporadic closures will be between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. through May 3. Motorists are urged to avoid the area or take alternative routes. Motorists will be detoured around Sweetwater Road at I-805 during nighttime closures.

The temporary detours are as follows: Westbound Sweetwater Road Closure at I-805: Drivers traveling west on Sweetwater Road will be detoured south onto Plaza Bonita Road, then west onto E Street/Bonita Road, north on Second Avenue to westbound Sweetwater Road.

Eastbound Sweetwater Road Closure at I-805: Drivers traveling east on Sweetwater Road will be detoured south onto Second Avenue, then east on E Street/Bonita Road, north on Plaza Bonita Road to eastbound Sweetwater Road.

Bridge improvements are part of the first phase of the I-805 South Express Lanes Project, a $1.4 billion effort to create a modern new transportation backbone for South County. Construction on the first phase of the project began in June. Work includes building one carpool lane in each direction along an eight-mile segment of the freeway stretching from East Palomar Street in Chula Vista to State Route 94 in San Diego. The carpool lanes are scheduled to open in fall 2013.

In an effort to reduce congestion during construction, travelers are being encouraged to consider alternative routes to work and school, especially during peak travel periods. One solution is to take the South Bay Expressway. Use the South Bay Expressway for an easy, stress-free commute to downtown, Sorrento Valley, Santee, Interstate 8 and Interstate 15, Otay Mesa, Mexico and more.

Construction crews will work to minimize impacts to nearby businesses, residents, and commuters. We appreciate your patience during construction. For more information about the project, please visit www.keepsandiegomoving.com/I805South.
