CHULA VISTANS CAN SAVE BIG WITH NEW POOL PUMPS

The Weekes’ family of Chula Vista loved their pool but didn’t love paying the high electric bill that came with it every month. After speaking with a trained and licensed pool service contractor, they found out they could upgrade their 2-horsepower single speed pool pump to a variable speed pump that runs longer but at significantly lower power.

Since the new pump was installed, it is saving the Weekes’ more than $55 per month compared to the old pump, and the timer has been re-programmed so the cleaning cycle does not run between the peak demand hours of 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. They have also found that their new pump has improved the pool’s water quality and is much quieter!

If you have an old single-speed pool pump motor, you can upgrade it to a more energy efficient variable speed pump and significantly reduce your energy use. The City of Chula Vista, in partnership with San Diego Gas & Electric and CleanTECH San Diego, recently completed several case studies of Chula Vista residents who installed new variable speed pool pumps. These residents experienced average electricity savings of 70 percent.

To view the case studies and learn more about the benefits of a similar pool pump upgrade, visit Chula Vista’s CLEAN website at www.chulavistaca.gov/clean. Additionally, SDG&E offers a $200 rebate to help bring down the cost of making the upgrade. If you think you are a good candidate for a new energy efficient pool pump, please contact a local pool contractor today. For further assistance or to receive a free home energy and water evaluation, please contact Chula Vista’s Conservation section at (619) 409-3893 or conservation@chulavistaca.gov.
