|In late June, the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery approved the City of Chula Vista application to expand their Recycling Market Development Zone (RMDZ) program. Chula Vista has administered the program for ten years by helping to process attractive loans provided by the state, offering technical assistance and free product marketing to businesses that use materials from waste to manufacture their products.
The RMDZ program encourages California-based recycling businesses to site new manufacturing facilities and expand existing operations. Low-interest loans help fund equipment and other business costs.
Previously, the zone-specific program was limited to Chula Vista and small portions of the County of San Diego. Now with the approved expansion, businesses as far as Imperial County will be able to request assistance. In total, 16 jurisdictions now participate in the program including local cities of Chula Vista, Coronado, El Cajon, Imperial Beach, Lemon Grove, National City, and San Diego as well as the County of San Diego. Benefits of the multi-jurisdiction collaboration will be felt throughout the region as products and materials made from recycled content will not only divert waste from local landfills, but will also create jobs and commerce which help the environment and the region’s green industry.
