The City’s Aquatics Division participated in a new Guinness World Record on June 18 for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson. Over 32,400 participants hosted by 432 facilities located in 13 countries helped break the record. The event is held to encourage water safety among children. Tragically, drowning remains the leading cause of unintended death for children ages 1-4, and the second leading cause of accidental death for children under 14. Research shows participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent, yet many children do not receive formal swimming or water safety training. For more information on water safety, please go to watersafety.chulavistaca.gov, or call (619) 409-1984.
