|In an effort to promote the Rethink Your Drink campaign, Chula Vista’s Recreation Department is hosting a free “dive in” movie night on July 26, at 7 p.m. It will be held at the Loma Verde Aquatic Center, 1420 Loma Lane. The campaign, also called Soda Free Challenge, is to encourage participants to pledge to not drink soda for two weeks with a goal of curbing the amount of high calorie and sugared drinks consumed.
Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 20 years with consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages among children and adolescents increasing. According to the Centers for Disease Control, sugar sweetened beverages are the largest source of added sugars in the diet of U.S. youths. Consuming these beverages increase the intake of calories – a factor potentially contributing to obesity among youth nationwide.
Those who pledge to participate in the Soda Free Challenge on July 26 will be admitted free to the movie and provided a tally sheet. Juice and sports drinks are allowed during the challenge, however, drinking water and milk are encouraged. Sponsored by Kaiser Permanente, the movie will begin at sunset. For more information, please call (619) 409-1984.
In addition, on July 27, Loma Verde Aquatic Center will close for annual maintenance through August 3. Parkway Aquatic Center, located at 385 Park Way, will be open during this time. Visit www.chulavistaca.gov/goto/swim for hours or call (619) 409-1985.
