Department Head

Michael Meacham, the Director of Conservation & Environmental Services, joined the City in February 1994 as the Conservation Coordinator.   Michael was promoted to Special Operations Manager in 1997 and to his current position in June of 2003. 

Michael’s assignments have included energy and water conservation, watershed protection, solid waste, household hazardous waste, street sweeping/litter abatement, public education and outreach, telecommunications, franchise and contract negotiations, and management.  Michael reports to the City Manager’s Office and serves as a liaison to various boards and commissions at the regional, state and federal level including assignment as the municipal representative on the State’s Climate Change Task Force.

Michael is a native Californian, born in San Francisco and a graduate of San Dieguito High School in Encinitas. Michael ventured out of State briefly to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science from George Williams College in Chicago, Illinois on a Scholarship from the W. Clement and Jessie V. Stone Foundation.  Prior to coming to the City, Michael worked for the Environmental Services Bureau in the City of Long Beach for four years where he also pursued a graduate degree in Public Administration at Cal State Long Beach. Michael was recognized as Environmentalist of the Year in recognition of his work in establishing and moving forward City environmental programs.
