The Medical Spanish Workshop offers a fun and interactive learning environment designed to help participants conduct complaint-specific patient assessments. Using a "teaching station" approach, students are divided into small groups that rotate, enhancing learning and reducing the intimidation of speaking in front of large groups.
Participants will develop medical Spanish communication skills by role-playing simulated patient assessments and managing an EMS run from arrival at the scene to arrival at the hospital or in the ED.
Assessment questions are phonetically spelled out for ease of pronunciation, utilizing common EMS acronyms such as GCS, PROBEELIST, MADAM, SAMPLE, OPQRST, and PASTE. Participants will learn basic terminology and patient assessment techniques to effectively interact with Spanish-speaking patients and their families.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon completion, students will be able to:
- Translate medical terminology between Spanish and English by matching meanings.
- Identify potential scene safety issues in common emergency medical scenarios.
- Gain a basic understanding of medical Spanish used in EMS assessments.
- Perform a standard patient assessment in Spanish.
LEARNING OUTCOME: Using the Rescue Spanish field guide, participants will perform patient assessments on Spanish-speaking patients during simulations, determine the history of present illness or injury, and identify priority symptoms using standard formats like OPQRST or SAMPLE.
