Chula Vista residents and businesses are invited to attend a community forum on the Chula Vista Police Department’s (CVPD) use of drones as first responders on Thursday, February 7. The event will be held in the Council Chambers located at 276 Fourth Avenue from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Speakers include City Manager Gary Halbert, Police Chief Roxana Kennedy, Police Captain Vern Sallee, Police Lieutenant Chris Kelley, Economic Development Director Eric Crockett and Cape representative Fritz Reber.

Chula Vista Police have begun deploying drones in response to 9-1-1 calls as part of the San Diego Regional Unmanned Aerial System Integration Pilot Program. Cameras attached to the drones can provide police with visual information minutes before patrol cars and officers arrive.

The forum will provide an opportunity for community members to get an up-close look at the devices CVPD are using. This forum also will answer questions about the limits on drone operations, including policies designed to protect residents’ safety and privacy. Attendees will be invited to provide comments and participate in follow-up focus groups or meetings.
