HERO FOR A DAY WITH CHULA VISTA FIRE AND YMCA

Post Date:03/14/2019 3:20 PM

On March 31, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Chula Vista Fire Department is partnering with the South Bay Family YMCA to host the "Hero for a Day Challenge." This event allows children and families to learn what it is like to be a firefighter and provides education about fire safety and burn prevention while raising funds for the YMCA. The event will be held at Fire Station #4 at 850 Paseo Ranchero in Chula Vista.

Designed for children ages 2-14, there is a suggested donation of $10 with all proceeds going to support the YMCA’s annual campaign. The Kids Firefighter Challenge includes pulling a fire hose through an obstacle course, crawling through an educational fire department structure, operating a fire hose, learning about fire safety and how to put out a fire.  In addition, the Chula Vista Police K-9 Unit will provide a live demonstration and fire engines will be on display. A raffle also will be held with various prizes including four field-level tickets to a San Diego Padres game and VIP concert tickets to see Santana or The Zac Brown Band at North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre.

The South Bay Family YMCA and the Eastlake YMCA are raising funds to ensure that no one is turned away from programs and services because of an inability to pay.  By providing quality programs that encourage youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y enables all people to be strong in spirit, mind and body.

“In alignment with the mission of the Chula Vista Fire Department, our Y’s help build safer and healthier communities for people of all ages. For over half a century, thousands of individuals young and old, have turned to our local YMCA for programs and services every year. They know and trust the Y because of its commitment to serve as a reliable, dependable and friendly nonprofit in the Chula Vista community,” said Chula Vista Fire Chief Jim Geering. “With the funds raised, the Y can help people in Chula Vista stay active and healthy and increase meaningful connections within the community.”

Sponsors of the event include the Chula Vista Firefighters Foundation, Chula Vista Firefighters Local 2180, State Farm agent Bernardo Vasquez and Seven Mile Casino.

Participants can pre-register at either the South Bay Family YMCA at 1201 Paseo Magda, the Eastlake YMCA at 2311 Boswell Road or at the event. For more information, please call (619) 421-9622.
