ILLEGAL DISPENSARY SHUT DOWN IN CITY TODAY

Post Date:05/03/2019 2:36 PM

Today, May 3, at approximately 8:30 a.m., officers of the Chula Vista Police Department partnered with Chula Vista’s Office of the City Attorney and the Code Enforcement Department to serve a civil abatement warrant at an illegal cannabis dispensary.

The dispensary, Cannavista, at 452 Third Avenue, was within a block of an elementary school and had generated a number of complaints from the community. There were no arrests made since this was a civil abatement process, but a significant amount of marijuana and cannabis-infused products were seized from the location. Many of these products and their labelling mimicked youth-oriented products like candy, cookies, and even popcorn.

Illegal and unpermitted cannabis businesses pose a significant health and safety hazard to the public. They can also have a significant impact on crime, traffic congestion, and community safety. In particular, illegal cannabis businesses can be the source of significant building and code violations that put the public at risk.

In January, the Chula Vista City Council approved 7-percent tax and regulation procedures for licensed cannabis businesses. But no businesses have yet to be licensed. Unlicensed cannabis businesses are illegal in Chula Vista.
