CHULA VISTA CITY COUNCIL FY 2020-21 BUDGET RELEASED FOR PUBLIC REVIEW/INPUT
The Chula Vista City Council voted on May 26 to accept the City Manager’s Proposed Budget for fiscal year 2020-21. Per the City Charter, the City Council proposed budget is now available for public review at least ten days in advance of the adoption of the budget.
As required by the City Charter, the City Manager’s proposed budget was submitted to the City Council at least 35 days before the beginning of the fiscal year. The Baseline Budget projections and assumptions were prepared in early March 2020, prior to the economic decline due to the COVID-19 crisis. Updated projections and recommended changes to the budget will be brought back for Council consideration early in the first quarter of FY 2020-21 when more data is available. The City Council will consider how to address any budget shortfalls and secure public input at that time.
The combined budget for all City funds totals $403.9 million including a General Fund operating budget of $206.7 million and a Capital Improvement Program (CIP) budget of $22 million. The budget also includes $15.3 million in Measure A and $19.2 million in Measure P funds. The Measure A and Measure P Citizens’ Oversight Committees affirmed that the proposed fiscal year budgets are in compliance with the adopted Measure A and Measure P expenditure plans.
Council will consider the adoption of the Fiscal Year 2020-21 budget at the meeting on June 9, 2020, at 5 p.m. At that meeting, the City Council will hold a hearing to give the public an additional opportunity to participate in the budget process. In compliance with the City Charter, a notice of this meeting will be published in the local newspaper at least ten days prior to the public hearing. The City Council may propose additional budget modifications after considering testimony at the public hearing.
