CHULA VISTA COUNCILMEMBER JOSE PRECIADO SWORN INTO CALIFORNIA COASTAL COMMISSION

Post Date:05/21/2025

Councilmember Jose Preciado has been appointed by Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas to the California Coastal Commission, a critical state agency entrusted with the preservation and enhancement of California's iconic coastline. The appointment was made official at a recent meeting of the City Council, where Preciado took the oath of office.

The California Coastal Commission is responsible for regulating land use along the state’s coast to protect the environment and promote public access to the coast. Preciado, a lifelong resident of San Diego’s South Bay, brings a wealth of experience, deep commitment to underserved communities, and great appreciation for equitable coastal access.

“I’ve had the opportunity both as a community activist and now as a City Council member to help guide one of the most significant coastal developments in California, the 535-acre Chula Vista Bayfront,” said Councilmember Jose Preciado. “The project’s cornerstone, Gaylord Pacific Resort and Convention Center brings more than 800 new, local jobs to an eager community and fulfills a long-held dream. This initiative is a model for coastal development and is underway thanks to a strong coalition of environmental advocates, labor leaders, the Port of San Diego, and the local community. Now, as a Coastal Commissioner, I look forward to supporting and advocating for collaborative solutions to the future of California’s coastal resources.”

In addition to coastal development, and to ensure the coastal environment is protected and accessible for all, Preciado will prioritize addressing the Tijuana River sewage crisis at our southern border. The ongoing crisis continues to pollute critical waterways and deny residents clean air, water and coastal access.
