CITY NAMES PALOMAR POINT

Post Date:11/19/2025 5:30 PM

The City of Chula Vista has officially named the former Palomar Motel as Palomar Point, marking a significant step in the ongoing transformation of the property into Permanent Supportive Housing. The City Council adopted the name during its meeting on Tuesday, November 18.

Located at 1160 Walnut Avenue in west Chula Vista, the former motel is being converted into 27 studio apartments for individuals and veterans experiencing homelessness earning 30% or less of the Area Median Income. The development will include 20 units for individuals supported by Project-Based Vouchers, seven units for veterans supported by Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH), and one on-site manager’s unit.

The project is expected to be completed by November 2026, with residents anticipated to move in by January 2027. The rehabilitation and conversion are led by Wakeland Housing, in collaboration with the City.

“The naming of Palomar Point, represents a new beginning for the property as well as a new beginning for many of our Residents and Veterans,” said Mayor John McCann. “Quality housing is important to our City, as it provides stability and economic opportunity to everyone.”

The name was selected through a public process aligned with City Policy. The top three finalists of the public engagement survey were: Palomar Point, Esperanza, and Studios at Palomar. Hundreds of residents cast their votes, and on November 18, City Council formally approved Palomar Point as the official name.

“Wakeland is proud to help bring Palomar Point to life, a community designed to provide safety, support, and a foundation for long-term stability,” said Rebecca Louie, Wakeland Housing President and CEO. “Every home here will open the door to new possibilities for residents rebuilding their lives.”

Onsite services provided by PATH (People Assisting the Homeless) and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will include individualized case management, behavioral health care, and wellness education. The complex will feature controlled access, camera monitoring, a community room, computer lab, and onsite offices for support services.
