“Be Creative” @ The Chula Vista Library This Summer!

Visit your library branch this summer and “Be Creative @ Your Library,” the theme of this year’s Summer Reading Program. Some of the exciting free activities for kids this summer include music, dance, clowns, animals, magic, and art workshops. Open to children from infant to age 12, the reading program offers youngsters a chance to receive incentives for reading or in the case of pre-readers—listening.

“Every year, we’re so excited to offer this reading program,” said Debbie Taylor, Branch Manager of the Civic Center Library. “We kick off with “Tunes and Tales with Nancy Saint John” on June 13 and over the next six weeks, offer many more fun programs with some great rewards for all our enthusiastic readers. Reading during the summer allows children to retain their hard earned reading skills. It’s a proven first step towards literacy for younger children.”

“Tunes and Tales” will officially kick-off the six weeks of summer reading fun at the Civic Center branch on June 13 at 2 p.m. However, beginning June 8 kids can register for the program. The program finale will be July 25 at 1 p.m. featuring a fun show with Mad Science at the South Chula Vista Library. Kids can still report on their reading and receive prizes until August 1.

Teens in grades 6-12 can join the “Express Yourself @ Your Library” Summer Reading Program to participate in some fantastic programs and receive rewards for reading. The teen programs will include crafts such as altered t-shirts, library bags, and journals, duct tape crafts, and Michelangelo Painting Night. The teen finale will be held July 25 at 4 p.m. at the South Chula Vista Library, and will include teen musical acts and drawings for prizes.

Visit any of the city’s libraries to sign up for the Summer Reading Programs. A complete calendar of events for children and teens is available at the library or by visiting online at www.chulavistalibrary.com. The branch libraries are Civic Center, 365 F St., (619) 691-5069; South Chula Vista, 389 Orange Ave., (619) 585-5755; and EastLake, 1120 EastLake Parkway, (619) 397-3980. All summer programs are sponsored in part by the Friends of the Chula Vista Library. This program made possible in part by a grant through the City of Chula Vista and the Chula Vista Performing & Visual Arts Grant.
