LIFEGUARD AND WATER SAFETY TRAINING CLASSES OFFERED
 
Chula Vista Aquatics is offering two American Red Cross courses during the winter school break at the Loma Verde Aquatic Center, 1420 Loma Lane. The classes are scheduled so that participants can sign up for both if desired.

Lifeguard Training is designed for those ages 16 and older and will teach potential lifeguards the skills and knowledge to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. Students will receive certificates which are necessary for employment with the City of Chula Vista for a Lifeguard I. (Starting salary for this position is $13.55 per hour.) Those that pass will receive American Red Cross certifications: Lifeguard CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED Essentials, and Title 22: First Aid for Public Safety Personnel. The class includes interview training as well. Classes with mandatory attendance on all dates will be held Dec. 21 from 8 a.m.-noon, Dec. 23 from 1-5 p.m., Dec. 26-27, 30-31, and Jan. 2-3, from 1-5 p.m. and Jan. 6-7, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is a $120 non-refundable fee which includes book rental as well as a $50 Red Cross certification fee. Water Safety Instructor class will train swim instructor candidates to teach courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program. Participants will develop an understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct trainings sessions, and how to evaluate participantsí progress. The class includes the Fundamentals of Instructor Training. (FIT). Classes, which are mandatory on all dates and times, will be held Dec. 21, from 1:30-5 p.m., Dec. 23, 26, 27, from 8 a.m. to noon, Dec. 28, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Dec. 30 and 31, from 8 a.m. to noon, and Jan. 2 from 8 a.m. to noon. A non-refundable fee of $145 will include a textbook. A separate $35 cost for certification fees will be due after pretesting. For more information, please call (619) 409-1986.

In addition, annual maintenance of both Chula Vista Aquatic Centers is scheduled for December and January. The Parkway Aquatic Center, 385 Park Way, will be closed December 1 through January 12. The Loma Verde Aquatic Center, 1420 Loma Lane, will be closed January 13-31. During the pool closures, all programs and rentals will transfer to the alternate pool.
