Traditional bicycles and electric bicycles (e-bikes) are an excellent way for students and families to get active, reduce car trips, and enjoy the outdoors. E-bike use is steadily growing, more than 1 million e-bikes were sold nationwide in 2023, outpacing sales of electric cars and trucks. Many e-bike riders are new to bicycling or are returning after many years away, which makes safety education especially important.
As more students begin using e-bikes and other electric micromobility vehicles the City of Chula Vista is committed to ensuring safe riding habits on our shared roads and trails. The Electric Micromobility Vehicle Toolkit was created to help schools, parents, and students understand the new local rules, learn best practices, and build safe riding habits. The toolkit includes explanations of state law and Chula Vista’s new e-bike regulations, student-friendly pledges, posters and infographics, and resources for teachers and principals to share in classrooms and assemblies. It also provides information on free safety classes and community workshops available to families.
The goal of this toolkit is simple: to give schools and families the tools they need to keep kids safe while enjoying the benefits of electric micromobility vehicles. By working together, we can ensure that students are confident, respectful, and responsible riders.
