California is a seismically active area with numerous faults throughout the region. This seismically active area is known as the “Pacific Ring of Fire”, which is a region of intense tectonic activity that circles the Pacific Ocean, which creates a risk of earthquakes and other geologic hazards for Chula Vista. The closest major fault system in the region is the Rose Canyon fault, approximately 14 miles northwest, and the Elsinore Fault on the east. Local faults also include the Sweetwater Fault and La Nacion Fault to the south of the City.
