Extreme heat days, those when temperatures are above historical averages, are the leading cause of weather-related deaths. Chula Vista is increasingly facing the challenges of extreme heat, a consequence of climate change that is intensifying across Southern California. This escalation in heat events poses significant health risks for the community, particularly for vulnerable populations. As the frequency and intensity of heatwaves are expected to increase in future years, community awareness and preparedness remain crucial in safeguarding public health and well-being.

National Weather Service (NWS) Extreme Heat Alerts

The NWS will provide public alerts before extreme heat events occur. It is important to be aware of these alerts and begin taking steps to prepare for these warm weather days.  Learn more about understanding heat alerts here: https://www.weather.gov/safety/heat-ww

 Cool Zones and Splash Pads

During extreme heat events, do not rely on a fan as your primary cooling device. Fans do not reduce body temperature or prevent heat-related illnesses. It is recommended to seek places that provide an air conditioned or cooler setting.

Extreme Heat Safety Tips

  • Never leave children or pets unattended in cars during periods of warm weather.

  • Stay hydrated and wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.

  • Avoid high-energy activities or work outdoors, during midday heat, if possible.

  • Consider pet safety. If they are outside, make sure they have plenty of cool water and access to comfortable shade. Asphalt and dark pavement can be very hot to your pet’s feet.
