About the Energy Prize
The Georgetown University Energy Prize is a national energy-reduction competition which challenges communities across the U.S. to dramatically reduce their energy use by 2016.
The national goal: Communities take charge and are aware of how they use energy, continue to reduce energy waste, and create sustainable, long-term plans to ensure energy-efficiency innovation that can be built upon and repeated for generations to come.
The Chula Vista goal: Chula Vista advanced to the semifinal round! This means we are one step closer to winning the $5-million-dollar prize. From January 2015 to December 2016, our collective energy reduction was measured frequently to prove community-wide energy reduction. After the competition closed in December 2016, we submitted final Chula Vista energy-reduction numbers—as well as examples of what fellow Chula Vista residents have done to impact energy use—with the goal of winning the Energy Prize and funding several key community-improvement efforts (see $5 Million and Change). The winning community will be announced in June 2017.
Check out www.guep.org for more information on the Georgetown University Energy Prize.
(For purposes of this prize, community energy-consumption measurements are restricted to energy supplied by gas and electric utilities directly to all residential and municipal customers.)
$5 Million and Change
If Chula Vista wins the $5-million-dollar prize, funds will be used to make Chula Vista more energy efficient:
40% of the winnings will go toward improving residential programs that help make homes more energy-efficient.
20% toward energy-focused programs that help community partners (e.g., schools)
20% toward energy-focused initiatives that help municipal buildings and programs
20% toward energy projects to be determined by Chula Vista residents
