The Willow Street Bridge Replacement Project will upgrade and improve a critical north-south connection between the City of Chula Vista and Bonita in the County of San Diego. The project will begin in the coming weeks and will take two years to complete. The existing bridge will be replaced with a larger, state-of-the art structure with two traffic lanes in each direction, new bike lanes, and upgraded sidewalks, railings and barriers. The $15.2 million project is funded by the Federal Highway Bridge Program and local Transportation Development Impact Fees.
The new 610-foot-long bridge will replace the existing structure that was constructed in 1940. The new bridge also accommodates the established trail undercrossing,
replaces the drainage culvert that feeds to the Sweetwater River, and improves connections to adjacent roadways.
Replacement of the bridge will occur in two stages to ensure continued traffic flow on Willow Street.
January 14, 2019 - January 28, 2019
Construction crews are working on Willow Street and adjacent areas. Work includes:
1. Bridge sidewalk and railing.
3. Bridge falsework removal.
2. Gas line installation in bridge.
The new bridge and the Willow Street/Sweetwater Intersection are closed to pedestrians. All pedestrians should use the municipal trail. New pedestrian detour signs are in place. Please follow all pedestrian detour signs.
Traffic Operations and Lane Closures
The public should expect intermittent lane closures, flagging, and potential delays. Please drive carefully, obey all construction signs, and watch for flaggers.
Pedestrian and Trail Access
As of March 12th, all pedestrians on Sweetwater Road north of the bridge will be directed away from the road and bridge to the pedestrian trail. New signage is in place for ALL PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC. No pedestrians should access the bridge or the Sweetwater Rd/Willow Street intersection. Access to the trail from Willow Street south of the Sweetwater River is closed, but access is provided at various locations along Bonita Road east of Willow Street. Please observe all signage and stay out of the areas marked as construction areas. Construction equipment will occasionally need to use part of the trail to access the construction site.
