Willow StreetThe Willow Street Bridge Replacement Project will upgrade and improve a critical north-south connection between the City of Chula Vista and Bonita in the County of San Diego. The project will begin in the coming weeks and will take two years to complete. The existing bridge will be replaced with a larger, state-of-the art structure with two traffic lanes in each direction, new bike lanes, and upgraded sidewalks, railings and barriers. The $15.2 million project is funded by the Federal Highway Bridge Program and local Transportation Development Impact Fees.

The new 610-foot-long bridge will replace the existing structure that was constructed in 1940. The new bridge also accommodates the established trail undercrossing,
replaces the drainage culvert that feeds to the Sweetwater River, and improves connections to adjacent roadways.

Replacement of the bridge will occur in two stages to ensure continued traffic flow on Willow Street.

Scheduled Closures

ADVANCED NOTICE:  Friday, April 26 at 9:00 PM to Monday, April 29 at 6:00 AM – Willow Street and Sweetwater Road at Willow Street will be closed for final paving operations for the entire weekend.  Detour will be in place to route traffic around the closed road to Central Avenue to the east and Plaza Bonita Road to the west.

Traffic Operations and Lane Closures

The public should expect intermittent lane closures, flagging, and potential delays.  Trucks will be exiting and entering the construction site in various locations.  Please drive carefully, obey all construction signs, and watch for flaggers.

Lane closures on Bonita Road are part of the City of Chula Vista paving repair project and are not a part of the Willow Street Bridge project.

Pedestrian and Trail Access

Pedestrians traveling north/south along Willow Street will be allowed to use the sidewalk on the west side of Willow Street.  The sidewalk on the east side of Willow Street remains closed just south of the bridge. Pedestrians wishing to access eastbound Sweetwater Rd. will still be required to use the municipal trail adjacent to or under the bridge to facilitate the completion of the curbs and sidewalks east of the Sweetwater Road intersection.

Access to the trail from Willow Street south of the Sweetwater River is closed, but access is provided at various locations along Bonita Road east of Willow Street. Please observe all signage and stay out of the areas marked as construction areas.  Construction equipment will occasionally need to use part of the trail to access the construction site.
