Boil Water Advisory Has Been Lifted

The Boil Water Advisory affecting a portion of Chula Vista has been lifted by California American Water.

For those living in the impacted area, you can once again drink and use tap water normally. Water quality test results no longer show signs of contamination.
California American Water recommends that all customers, including residents, schools, and businesses, flush the plumbing in their building or home by running all cold-water faucets for at least five minutes each. Ice from ice makers should be discarded and replaced.
Health care facilities should refer to CDC’s recommended guidelines.
Commercial customers with food preparation facilities, can visit the County of San Diego’s Department of Environmental Health and Quality website for further guidance.

Water Boil Advisory remains in effect as Cal American awaits additional testing results in the afternoon or evening. The cause is still under investigation.

California American Water has established water distribution sites. The closest point of distribution for Chula Vista residents is Montgomery-Waller Community Park.

Am I affected by the Boil Water Advisory?

Type in your address at System Area Boundary Layer (SABL) Look-up Tool (ca.gov). If your water service system name is "CAL-AM WATER", then your water provider is Cal American and therefore you are affected by the Boil Water Notice.

Sweetwater Authority and Otay Water District customers are NOT affected.

What To Do During a Boil Water Advisory Notice

Residents affected by the boil water advisory should use bottled water or boil tap water.
 
Handwashing: You can use tap water and soap. Make sure to scrub hands for at least 20 seconds.
 
Bathing/Showering: Be careful not to swallow any water and use caution when bathing babies and young children.
 
Brushing teeth: Brush teeth with boiled or bottled water.
 
Caring for pets: Give pets bottled water or boiled water that has cooled.
 
Washing Dishes: If possible, use disposable plates, cups, and utensils.
 
Laundry: It is safe to wash clothes as usual.
 
Cleaning: Use bottled water, boiled water, or water that has been disinfected with bleach.

WATER REMAINS SAFE TO CONSUME FOR SWEETWATER AUTHORITY AND OTAY WATER DISTRICT CUSTOMERS:

Sweetwater Authority and Otay Water District are NOT affected by the boil water advisory that is affecting parts of San Diego County. Residents and businesses impacted were notified directly by Cal American yesterday.

Cal American has released an updated map. Cal American customers with questions, call Cal-Am Water at 1-888-237-1333 or https://alertsdetail.awapps.com/alert/27862.  

What does the “Boil Water Advisory” mean? Drinking water system tested present for E.coli bacteria. Affected residents have been asked to boil water before drinking or using to kill bacteria and other organisms in the water. The Boil Water Order will remain in effect until laboratory results confirm the absence of bacteria in the water supply.⁠
 
Residents affected should use bottled water or boiled tap water for drinking, brushing teeth, and to prepare and cook food. When boiling water, bring it to a full rolling boil for at least one minute, and then allow it to cool before use. Be careful not to swallow water when bathing or showering, and to supervise young children and babies when being bathed.

The City of Chula Vista is aware of the Boil Water Advisory issued by the County of San Diego affecting parts of San Diego County including Imperial Beach and portions of San Diego, Coronado and Chula Vista. The map of affected areas provided by Cal American Water Company mistakenly identified a large portion of Chula Vista.

Cal American is working to update the map. Chula Vista residents and businesses impacted were notified directly by Cal American yesterday. The City will continue to monitor the situation and will be coordinating with the County, State, and California American Water Company on any additional response actions.
